South-Western Youth Team Tennis is coming soon. This program is for all kids Grades 1-8 and runs June 4th through July 9th on Tuesdays. It is in the evenings and will be held at Grove City high School. This program helps students learn teamwork, balance, problem solving, agility, basic tennis skills, and how to have fun. All players will receive a team t-shirt, an age appropriate tennis racquet, a ball, and a goody bag. Students who have applied to Columbus State in the past for College Credit Plus courses should have received a packet in Homeroom.  Within that packet is a re-test form for courses that you may not have the eligible scores.  If you are interested in retesting, Mrs. Hibbitt needs you to return the re-test form to the student office by February 27.  This allows her to make sure you are on the Testing Roster for March.  Otherwise, you may have to go to directly to Columbus State to retest. 

Hey Cougars! Are you a senior and like to play basketball? Sign up for a students vs teachers basketball game during your lunch period by the administrators table.  The sign up sheet will be available Tuesday through Thursday

Tzu Chi USA Scholars is offering a $1000 scholarship to college-bound high school students on the basis of financial need, academic achievement and community involvement.  See Naviance to apply.  Deadline is March 1, 2019.

This past Saturday your Westland AFJROTC Cadets competed in a drill team competition here at home.  A total of 6 teams from around the state competed in the event.  All of our cadets performed extremely well.  The varsity armed infantry drill regulation (IDR) team won 3rd place, the junior varsity unarmed IDR team won 3rd place, the JV color guard team won 3rd place, the inspection team won 3rd place and the armed exhibition team won 3rd place.  Additionally, Michael Ritchie won 3rd place in individual armed exhibition, Connor Allen and Jesse Corry won 9th and 10th place respectively out of 200 cadets in the JV knockout competition and Brianna Woods, Alexis Roth and Jesse Corry won 4th, 5th and 8th place respectively out of 250 cadets in the combined JV and varsity knockout competition.

The Westland Gaming Club will have its first meeting after school this Wednesday from 3:30-5pm in Room 107 (music wing). The gaming club is open to any Westland student in any grade. Gaming club is for anyone who enjoys video games, card games, boardgames, or chess. Compete against your friends after school and discover some new games along the way! We hope to see you there!

Are you interested in taking college courses for FREE next year through Columbus State and the College Credit Plus program?  You MUST submit your application to Columbus State by Wednesday, February 27.  Mrs. Hibbitt will be in the cafeteria during the lunch periods on FRIDAY, February 22 AND WEDNESDAY, February 27 to help you with your CCP application to Columbus State.  You MUST have your Social Security Number in order to apply!

Westland Area Library is currently hiring a part-time shelver for 15 hours a week. Open to high school student 16 yrs or older. Some evenings, Saturdays and Sundays required. $8.55/hr to start. Applications available at any Southwest Public Library location.

The Ohio State University 2019 Philosophy & Critical Thinking Summer Camp (PACT) is currently accepting applications from students grades 8-12. Are you a boy?  Do you want to play soccer for the boys’ soccer team next season?  If so, we will start conditioning/playing next Monday, March 4 from 3:30-4:30 pm in the rec center.  We will condition/play every Monday and Thursday after school for the remainder of the school year.  If you have any questions, please see Mr. Dato in room 302 or Mr. Neal in room 604.

Attention college bound students – The PSAT is now for sale at the activity window during your lunch periods. This is a great way to practice for your college entrance exams. Juniors – this test is especially important for you as it can qualify you for National Merit Scholarship consideration. The test is Wednesday October 10th in the gym. The cost is $16. If you have free or reduced lunch you can qualify for a fee waiver. We have 100 tests and 62 fee waivers. Once they are gone they’re gone. So sign up today

Are you wanting to get more involved in things at Westland? Do you want to help plan Homecoming? Are you looking for a way to earn service hours? Do you love pizza? If you answered “Yes” to these questions, Student Council is the group for you! The first Student Council Meeting of the year will be after school on Thursday, September 6. The meetings take place in room 709 and are from 3:30-4:15. If you think you are interested in joining student council OR if you are a returning member, this is the meeting for you. Please plan to attend. See Mrs. Dufresne or Mr. Cherup with any questions.

 

We currently have many available spaces for The ALC programs. If you think you are interested in College Credit Plus Courses for second semester see Mrs. Hibbitt ASAP.

 

Attention all Sophomores!!  Class officer nomination forms are available from Mrs. Shore (the guidance counselor) in the student office or from Mr. Eckard in room 801.  Completed nomination forms are due back to Mrs. Shore by Thursday, September 13th at the end of the day.  Voting will take place On Thursday, September 20th.

 

Hey Seniors!  Do you want to be more involved with making decisions for the senior class?  Do you have great ideas on end-of-the-school year activities?  Are you interested in running for the Class of 2019 President, Vice-President, or Secretary?  Petitions to become a senior class officer are available in the student office.  The deadline to have the petition turned is September 21.  Voting will take place soon after!  See Mrs. Hibbitt or Ms. Dillon for more information!

WHS Gymnastics – Open gyms start Wednesday, September 5, 2018 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Gotta Flip Gym and will continue every Wednesday at the same time through the end of September. Season starts November 2018 so get signed up now. Stop in the Student Office and get a flier or stop by the Athletic Office for more information.

 

Girls tennis has a home match tonight at 4 PM against Hilliard Davidson. Come out to the tennis courts and show some Cougar Pride!

Girls’ Soccer traveled and took on Marion Harding this past Saturday. The team played incredibly hard up until the final minute, coming back to tie the game on 3 different occassions but were never able to get out front.

Shelbey Barnhill led the scoring with her first four goals of the season and Bella Garner scored her 2nd and 3rd goals. Aleysha Martinez had a crtiical assist to help tie the game back up.

Sadly  wasn’t quite enough to get the win. Your Lady Cougars fell 6-7 but improved immensely from their 4-0 loss last season.  Girls’ Soccer looks forward to bouncing back on Tuesday against Grove City at home

 

 

Over the weekend more than 100 Distance runners came to Westland as the Cross Country Team Hosted the Best of the SouthWest Invitational.

The Woman’s team ran a tactical race to bring home the 2nd place trophy. Lead runner Aja Nathans finished 3rd over-all to pace the Cougars.

The Men’s team placed 3rd in what was the closest team finish in the history of the meet. Kevin Reyes led the Cougs with his 3rd place Medal winning performance.

The Cross Country teams will next compete on Saturday at the McGowan Invitational at Watkins Memorial High School

 

 

Any boys, not currently playing a sport, interested in playing baseball this upcoming season can join the team after school Tuesday September 4th for weight lifting in the rec. Contact Coach Shannon for more details.

The football team lost a hard fought battle to the Red Devils 44-46 in double overtime. Great job, guys! Next week they take on Delaware Hayes and it’s a HOME GAME AGAIN! Homecoming 2017 will be held at the Makoy Center in Hilliard on Saturday, October 14 from 7-10 PM. All school rules apply including dress code.
