Are you wanting to get more involved in things at Westland? Do you want to help plan Homecoming? Are you looking for a way to earn service hours? Do you love pizza? If you answered “Yes” to these questions, Student Council is the group for you! The first Student Council Meeting of the year will be after school on Thursday, September 6. The meetings take place in room 709 and are from 3:30-4:15. If you think you are interested in joining student council OR if you are a returning member, this is the meeting for you. Please plan to attend. See Mrs. Dufresne or Mr. Cherup with any questions.

 

We currently have many available spaces for The ALC programs. If you think you are interested in College Credit Plus Courses for second semester see Mrs. Hibbitt ASAP.

 

Attention all Sophomores!!  Class officer nomination forms are available from Mrs. Shore (the guidance counselor) in the student office or from Mr. Eckard in room 801.  Completed nomination forms are due back to Mrs. Shore by Thursday, September 13th at the end of the day.  Voting will take place On Thursday, September 20th.

 

Hey Seniors!  Do you want to be more involved with making decisions for the senior class?  Do you have great ideas on end-of-the-school year activities?  Are you interested in running for the Class of 2019 President, Vice-President, or Secretary?  Petitions to become a senior class officer are available in the student office.  The deadline to have the petition turned is September 21.  Voting will take place soon after!  See Mrs. Hibbitt or Ms. Dillon for more information!

 

The first Art Club meeting of the year will be next Wednesday after school in room 1001 (Mr. Meeker’s room) until 5 PM. Anyone interested in joining art club can come! See you there.

 

SPORTS

WHS Gymnastics – Open gyms start Wednesday, September 5, 2018 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Gotta Flip Gym and will continue every Wednesday at the same time through the end of September. Season starts November 2018 so get signed up now. Stop in the Student Office and get a flier or stop by the Athletic Office for more information.

 

Girls tennis has a home match tonight at 4 PM against Hilliard Davidson. Come out to the tennis courts and show some Cougar Pride!

Girls’ Soccer traveled and took on Marion Harding this past Saturday. The team played incredibly hard up until the final minute, coming back to tie the game on 3 different occassions but were never able to get out front.

Shelbey Barnhill led the scoring with her first four goals of the season and Bella Garner scored her 2nd and 3rd goals. Aleysha Martinez had a crtiical assist to help tie the game back up.

Sadly  wasn’t quite enough to get the win. Your Lady Cougars fell 6-7 but improved immensely from their 4-0 loss last season.  Girls’ Soccer looks forward to bouncing back on Tuesday against Grove City at home

 

 

Over the weekend more than 100 Distance runners came to Westland as the Cross Country Team Hosted the Best of the SouthWest Invitational.

The Woman’s team ran a tactical race to bring home the 2nd place trophy. Lead runner Aja Nathans finished 3rd over-all to pace the Cougars.

The Men’s team placed 3rd in what was the closest team finish in the history of the meet. Kevin Reyes led the Cougs with his 3rd place Medal winning performance.

The Cross Country teams will next compete on Saturday at the McGowan Invitational at Watkins Memorial High School

 

 

Any boys, not currently playing a sport, interested in playing baseball this upcoming season can join the team after school Tuesday September 4th for weight lifting in the rec. Contact Coach Shannon for more details.

The football team lost a hard fought battle to the Red Devils 44-46 in double overtime. Great job, guys! Next week they take on Delaware Hayes and it’s a HOME GAME AGAIN! Attention all Freshmen!!

Alright stop, collaborate, and listen!!!  No one turned in a class officer nomination form?  We have extended the deadline to turn in the nomination form until Friday, September 29th.  We want student involvement in helping us to decide cool things planned for our Freshman.  You don’t want Mr. Eckard and Mrs. Shore making all of the decisions for the the Freshman class…they think Vanilla Ice is great rapper!!  Nomination forms are available at the desk in the student office.

The SWCSD College Fair will be on Tuesday, September 26 from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Grove City HS Rec Center. All branches of the US military and nearly 80 colleges and universities will be available to provide information and answer questions. In addition, there will be a Financial Aid Workshop at 7:00 PM. Financial aid experts from local colleges and universities will provide an overview of the financial aid process. ALL are welcome! Admission is FREE!

 

QuestBridge is pleased to announce the 2017 QuestBridge National College Match. Quest Bridge is open to seniors in the top 5-10% of their class.

Homecoming 2017 will be held at the Makoy Center in Hilliard on Saturday, October 14 from 7-10 PM. All school rules apply including dress code. Attention college bound students – The PSAT is now for sale at the activity window during your lunch periods. This is a great way to practice for your college entrance exams. Juniors – this test is especially important for you as it can qualify you for National Merit Scholarship consideration. The test is October 11th in the gym. The cost is $16. If you have free or reduced lunch you can qualify for a fee waiver. We have 100 tests and 50 fee waivers. Once they are gone they’re gone. So sign up today

If interested, you only need to attend one meeting that day – either before school or after school. The meetings are held in the library.

Girls Varisty Volleyball takes on Marysville away on Tuesday. Boys Varsity Soccer faces off against Upper Arlington at Home tomorrow night, Girls Soccer travels to UA, and Girls tennis plays Hamilton Township at home tomorrow.

Also, wrestling open mats are tonight from 5:30-7:30.

Both scholarships are posted on Naviance; see one of the counselors about applying. The deadline for both scholarships is April 30th.

A HUGE congratulations to the Growl’s own Ivan Suazo for getting 1st place in 60M Hurdles at the OATCC State Meet this weekend. This placement qualified Ivan for nationals in NYC!

The Central Ohio Leadership Academy is an FREE intensive 6-day experience where students develop their leadership effectiveness by participating in professionally facilitated training sessions, interactive team challenges, and substantial discussions with peers and proven community leaders. You must be able to commit to the entire week, July 25-30, 2016. See your counselor for more information! Application deadline is today.

Ohio Business Week is the only week-long business camp in Ohio where high school students practice tackling real business-world challenges while having a real college experience. The Messerly Science Scholarship is now active on Naviance. This scholarship is only for Westland Students. Must have a minimum 2.75 GPA or higher and minimum 21 ACT. The DECA Team is dedicated to support the Ronald Mcdonald House located Downtown Columbus, Ohio.  Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio “creates, finds and supports programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children in Central Ohio.”  For the remainder of the school year we would like your help. Please let your students know that we are  having a competition for each home room class to see who can collect the most pop tabs to make a difference in the young lives of children.  Winners will be announced every nine weeks. Listed below are the dates the winners will be determined by weight of tabs turned in. Dresses for Divas will be at Westland High School during lunch periods on Thursday, February 25. Dresses for Divas is a non-profit organization that provides prom dresses and accessories to girls in need. They will be having a Prom Dress Event on Saturday, April 9 at Buckeye Christian Church in Grove City. Stop by for more information!

There will be a MANDATORY student council meeting after school today in Mrs. Spilman’s room. We need to discuss the upcoming top 25/WISE awards as well as our spring supply drive. Please plan to attend. This meeting should end by 4:30.

Ohio Business Week is the only week-long business camp in Ohio where high school students practice tackling real business-world challenges while having a real college experience. Ohio Business Week takes place at Ohio Dominican University June 19-25, 2016. The deadline to apply is April 30, 2016. See your counselor for more information!

Any boy interested in Tennis should attend a meeting today at 3:30 in the Library with Coach Dan Witteman. Information will be available about the start of the season. The meeting will last only 30 minutes. Even if you have never played before you are welcome as Coach Witteman will have extra tennis racquets for you to use. Tennis is a sport you can play the rest of your life. We hope to have a good turnout.

Attention all indoor track athletes!!! There will be no indoor track practice this Wednesday due to early release.
