Mount Carmel West is currently accepting applications for summer Teen Volunteering. Sports

Westland AFJROTC attended the Tecumseh Regional Drill Meet Championship and scored an amazing victory, Hannah Hodge competed in the Open Knockout competition against 350 Drill Team Cadet’s and won 1st place overall in the competition. Cieran Adair placed sixth in the same event, congratulations on their hard fought victories.

 

Congratulations to the WHS Concert Band who received an “excellent” rating this weekend and to  Our Symphonic Band, Symphonic Choir and Chorale who all received “superior” ratings, which qualifies them for OMEA State Contest! Great job!

 

 

The boys’ basketball banquet will be Tomorrow from 6 PM to 7:30 PM in the Commons.

You must have completed the season as a member of the team to attend the banquet.

We have started our annual Reach out and Read book collection.  This is an annual school-wide effort to collect books for Nationwide Children’s Hospital.  Please help by  donating new or used children’s books for up to age 12 to your homeroom class. Students AND teachers can both donate! We will collect books during the weeks of March 5-March 23.

The Franklin County Youth Council is seeking high school students between the ages of 14 – 18 to become actively involved in the council for 2018-19. Their purpose if to encourage youth involvement in the community, build leadership skills and voice policy ideas & concerns of community youth. Applications will be accepted thru Monday, March 19. Sports

Attention  all girls interested in playing soccer. We will have conditioning in the rec from 3.30 to 4.30, Tuesday March 6th and Thursday, March 8th. We will condition for about 45 minutes before playing a short scrimmage with those that complete the full workout. Find Coach Schwarten or Coach Harris.

 

 

Attention all boys interested in playing soccer:  on Wednesday, March 7, we will start conditioning and playing in the Rec Center after school from 3:30 – 4:30 on Wednesdays and Fridays.  If you have any questions, please see Mr. Dato in room 302 or Mr. Neal in room 604.

March is Women’s History Month!

Cristina Jiménez is a leader in the youth-led immigrant rights movement and instrumental in creating the DACA program. By sharing her own story of being undocumented, Jiménez inspired others to come forward, and helped change the discourse on immigration.  #womenshistorymonth

 

We have started our annual Reach out and Read book collection next week.  This is an annual school-wide effort to collect books for Nationwide Children’s Hospital.  Please help by  donating new or used children’s books for up to age 12 to your homeroom class. Students AND teachers can both donate! We will collect books during the weeks of March 5-March 23.

* The homeroom with the most donations will be provided breakfast on the day of that teacher’s  choice

* A running score will be given each Monday and Friday through The Growl

 

Attention Seniors: If you have been accepted to any colleges, please bring your acceptance letter to the student office.  Mrs. Williams is keeping track of the colleges our students have been accepted to. Mrs. Williams is also going to track the amount of scholarship dollars that our students earn. Attention Seniors: There are (2) scholarship opportunities open to Westland High School students only! The Garrett P. Burton Good Samaritan Scholarship  is for a student “Being an Agent of Change.” You must be able to show how you help people feel more accepted and go above and beyond to spread joy & compassion. The deadline to apply is April 26th.

Also, The James Tolliver Cultural Diversity Scholarship is available. This scholarship is for a WHS student who has participated in at least 2 WHS Cultural Diversity Club activities. See Naviance for more details.

A huge congratulations to Edgar Cruz, Kyle Newman, and Dru Sherman who competed at the Division 1 District Wrestling tournament this past weekend at Hilliard Darby. Special recognition goes to Dru who placed 6th place at the tournament, which means he is one of the top 24 wrestlers in the state in his weight class in Division 1! This is the best result for a Westland wrestler since 2011, and Dru also advanced to the semi-finals of the tournament, which a Westland wrestler hasn’t done since 2009. Way to work hard this year Dru! Great job representing Westland!

 

Congratulations to the Westland WinterGuard for a first place win in the Scholastic Regional A Class at the OIPA Competition at Franklin Heights on Saturday!

National Honor Society is conducting a Toy Drive to benefit a local homeless shelter from now until December 14. Please bring in any new or gently used toys to your homeroom classroom. The homeroom with the greatest number of toys donated will win a prize! No stuffed animals please. Help bring some joy to children this year.

 

Do you like to write? Do you like history? Want to win $10,000? Submit an essay to the Profile in Courage Essay Contest. Your essay must describe and analyze an act of political courage by any US elected official who served during or after 1917. For more information, see Mrs. Young in the library. Sports

Congratulations to the swim team for a very successful first meet! All of the swimmers have dropped time in their events and are getting better every day. A special congratulations goes to Rachel Binion for setting a new record in the 100 butterfly, Brenna Gilliam for winning both the 50 and 100 freestyle JV events,  and to Tim Wotring for dropping below 30 seconds in the 50 free and below 1:10 in the 100 free. The team is back in action on Friday at Dublin Scioto.
